2013 Outback Bowl South Carolina Player Quotes
South Carolina WR and Outback Bowl MVP Ace Sanders
On whether he had something to prove … I came out wanting to show something, but at the same time I just try to keep patient and just let the game come to me because I’ve found that when you press for stuff it doesn’t really play out like you want it to so you just have to be patient.”
On his 63-yard punt return for a touchdown … Once I saw Bruce Ellington and Brison Williams holding up the gunners there was nobody else downfield.
On the Michigan defense … They played exactly like we thought they would play, honest, try not to get beat deep, play their assignment, everything they did on film. So it was true Michigan team like we saw on film.
On playing well in his home state … It’s just a real good feeling. I just want to thank God for giving me the opportunity to come out here and showcase my talent.
On South Carolina relying on the pass … We know if the ground game is not moving coach is going to put it in the air. I just told all the receivers just play confident, just play to your abilities and that’s what everybody did.
On South Carolina finishing the season with a win … It’s a big statement. We battled in the fourth quarter and went all the way down to the wire. It just shows that this team still has a lot of heart and a lot of fight and we’ll be back next year to do the same thing over again.
South Carolina QB Dylan Thompson
On what he did to mentally prepare himself to go in for QB Connor Shaw … All during our preparation in practice I kept telling myself that this was going to be like a game. So I wasn’t all that nervous. It was one of those things that he just tweaked it and it really, really hurt. He’s a warrior, and a great competitor and friend. He’s everything you want in a quarterback. But, yes, I was extremely focused on being ready whenever I was needed.
On why South Carolina’s quarterback situation works so well … I think, to be honest we have a great team. We trust each other, we pull for each other, and it’s no different with the quarterbacks on our team. I want Connor Shaw, every time he steps on the field, to go 25-for-25, every time. And I think, honestly he wants the same thing for me. We just trust each other and love playing with each other.
South Carolina DE Jadeveon Clowney
On the mutual respect of Clowney and Michigan OL Taylor Lewan … We have a lot of respect for each other, he’s pretty good. He and the lineman from Tennessee are the best linemen that I have played against in college.
On his thoughts of Denard Robinson … Man he’s fast. He’s extremely hard to tackle.
On what he thought on the play when he made the hit on Denard Robinson … It was the same situation as last year against Georgia when I came through and hit Aaron Murray. It was the same play and same call. I knew the ball came out today so I was just looking for the ball. After the hit, I was just trying to score a touchdown.
On whether he felt frustrated before the hit on Denard Robinson … I was frustrated a lot during the game because they kept squaring me out. I was getting double-teamed, but I always have to play like that.
On what he thought when Michigan scored with 3:29 left in the game… We’ve been back and forth like that all year. I knew that we were going to make a big play and score a touchdown and not go for the field goal. I told them on the sidelines that coach (Steve) Spurrier would not leave it in the kickers’ hands. That’s how he is. I knew that there was going to be a big play coming up soon.
