Doug Flutie to Speak at Outback Bowl Delioitte LuncheonAugust 28, 2006Tampa, FL – Heisman Trophy winner and former CFL and NFL quarterback Doug Flutie will be the guest speaker at the Outback Bowls Deloitte Kickoff Luncheon to be held on October 10 in Tampa. Flutie is currently a college football analyst for ABC and ESPN. He is one of the most recognized names in the game of football, on any level. Flutie joins a list of popular celebrities who have spoken at the luncheon over the years such as Lou Holtz, Joe Theismann, Lee Corso, Craig James, Paul Maguire and even Joe Namath. The invitation-only luncheon is the official Outback Bowl Team Selection Committee kickoff as they begin scouting potential teams for the New Years’ Day bowl game. Doug burst on the scene while a senior quarterback at Boston College in 1984 when he completed what even today is known as “Hail Flutie,” a desperation Hail Mary in the final play of the game giving Boston College an upset win against defending National Champion Miami. Flutie went on to win the Heisman Trophy and Maxwell Club Trophy and making Flutie a household name. Doug played in the USFL, the CFL and NFL over a twenty year professional career. He was named Most Outstanding Player six times and led his teams to three Grey Cup Championships in eight seasons with the CFL. In 1998, Doug was selected to the NFL Pro Bowl team while with the Buffalo Bills. Flutie would become a four-time AFC Offensive Player of the Week in the league. Over his career, he threw for more than 57,800 yards. The Outback Bowl will celebrate its 21st year on January 1, 2007 in Raymond James Stadium. The game matches teams from the SEC and Big Ten conference and will be televised internationally on ESPN at 11:00 A.M. ET. Last year’s game brought in 42,000 out of market visitors from 43 states.
