2015 Auburn Outback Bowl Postgame Player Quotes

DL Ben Bradley

On what kind of challenge Wisconsin RB Melvin Gordon presented:
"He's a real good back, but we knew that by watching film. He just keeps his motor running. That's the challenge he gave to us"

On what makes Wisconsin RB Melvin Gordon a challenge:
"They just disguise him, motion with him, make him give them the ball and stuff, little trick plays. There was really no difference, like when he was in shotgun you knew he was going to pass. We just gave him too much time in the pocket"

On Wisconsin's fourth down conversion:
"We should have had more stops on third down. It was just people not wrapping up. That's pretty much it"

WR Sammie Coates

On his last game as an Auburn Tiger:
"It was really difficult. It was the last time I was going to battle with them, and to come out with a loss it really hurts, and this was the last time I get to play with these boys and I love them so much, of course you want to do everything you can to come out with a win. It just didn't happen today"

On what was going through his mind during the final drive of regulation:
"You just always have to have faith in your teammates no matter what the situation looks like. So I knew it was going to end up coming down to a field goal and they kicked it, so that is all we can give"

On playing without Auburn WR D'Haquille Williams:
"It's no different. We've got a lot of great guys that can make plays at any given time. We just have someone step up and they did it. That's all you've got to look for in a team. To have teammates that will step up when someone is down. We did that today, and I am proud of my team"

WR Ricardo Lewis

On Wisconsin's pressure on the passing game:
"I mean it didn't really catch us by surprise. We knew all week that we would have to make plays down the field. Coming to the game, in the first half, it was clear to see that's what the deal was"

On the consistency of the Auburn offense:
"It was very disappointing. When that happens, when we're very inconsistent throughout the game, usually the end result is losing, just like today. We just have to learn from our mistakes and move forward"

On if overtime is a disadvantage for the Auburn offense:
"I like being in the red zone and make plays in the red zone. I wasn't in it during overtime, in the red zone, but I feel like wherever we are at on the field we are going to score. Sometimes it just doesn't fall on our table, and that's what happened"

RB Cameron Artis-Payne

On if this loss summed up the 2014 Season:
"I wouldn't say it summed up the year, but yeah it might have summed up the year. You're right. All year we hadn't executed down the stretch the way we did the previous year that got us in the National Championship. That's why we are sitting here with the record that we have currently. Just mental mistakes, even physical mistake, missed assignments, things of that nature. That's why we haven't been able to come out with a win in some of these close games"

On how luck affected their season:
"Well we definitely didn't get the breaks we got the previous year. But at the end of the day, you can't have it categorized on this level. You can't say it was luck. The breaks didn't go our way this year. They went our way the previous year. That's just football sometimes. I think next year's team, they have a great team, and they will be able to bounce back and do what we couldn't do this year"

On feeling like the season had missed opportunities:
"I never feel like it's a missed opportunity. We have a better team than what we just played. We've got a better team than what our record says. I really wish we could have made some of the key plays that we needed to make to win some of these games"

LB Kris Frost

On what's on his mind:
"Well it was a hard fought season. Obviously it didn't end the way we wanted it to. Really just got the older guys on our mind, the guys that I came here with, and the seniors just as a whole, wanting to send them out on a good note and came up a little short. We're just happy that we got to be around those guys for four years and it's been a great ride"

On missed opportunities throughout the season:
"Well every time you have a lose you look at it that way, but right now it's really just all about knowing what those seniors and knowing what we went through with those guys. Recognizing that and congratulating those guys for coming this far and the guys that have graduated, that's a big accomplishment. It's an opportunity lost, but we know it's life. You have your ups & downs and you have to come back strong"

On Auburn's rush defense:
"They spread us out a little bit and tried to crease us a few times and they were successful. Coming out of halftime, we knew that they had two big time runs, and that they gashed us a few more in the second half in some big spots. They did a good job spreading us out and doing what they do and pounding the run and creasing us"

On whether he has made his decision on returning to Auburn:
"Not yet"

On Wisconsin RB Melvin Gordon:
"He's really great. He has a lot of moves and is arsenal. He's a fast guy, big guy. He's a great [running] back. We play great backs a lot and he's going to be really successful on the next level and I wish him the best of luck"

OL Reese Dismukes

On what he is thinking about:
"Obviously I'm disappointed that we couldn't come out with a win. We didn't take advantage of some things that we needed to. Kind of the way the cards fell. Thought we left it all on the field, but at the end of the day, in this certain situation, that is all that matters"

On if he believes this year was highlighted by missed opportunities:
"I don't think so. We knew it was going to be a gauntlet that we would have to go through as far as the whole season goes. We knew it was going to be tough. We stuck together as a team through the whole time, and you know you're not going to win them all. I am really proud of this team and the way we handle ourselves and the way we fought"

On if today's performance summed up the year:
"I don't know that you can say that. They're a good team. We've got to give credit were credit is deserved. Wisconsin is a good team and we obviously didn't do the right things to win the game"

On Auburn QB Nick Marshall's performance:
"Heart. He stuck it out, like the rest of us. He left it all out there on the field and that's just the type of player that he is. He's a winner and I'm going to miss being with him"

On how it feels to complete his final game at Auburn:
"I don't know if it is that much of a reality. It's there, that I'm done. It hasn't really hit me yet. I know it's there, it just hasn't really hit me"

DB Jermaine Whitehead

On whether he thought there was anything that could have been done differently defensively throughout the game:
"Not at all, if anything maybe a little more aggressive. They weren't really doing anything in the passing game; we should have just played more aggressively as far as each individual player and went to get the ball player as a group instead of doing it with a one-on-one tackle."

QB Nick Marshall

On his feelings following the game:
"With this being my last game as an Auburn Tiger I really wanted to come out and get a win; but things happen. We just fought through the whole game and in the end it didn't end how we wanted. I'm still blessed to have been an Auburn Tiger."

On what it was like to go against a team that has been so effective on third-down defense:
"They (Wisconsin) is really fundamentally sound and they do what they are supposed to do. You have to hand it to them; we didn't make the plays that we should have made tonight and they stood their ground on third down. We just didn't get it done."

On what Wisconsin did defensively to slow the Auburn running game down:
"We got some push off the ball, and we executed well, we just need to make the plays that we didn't make."

On how comfortable he felt without Auburn WR D'Haquille Williams there:
"I still felt comfortable. With him there, I don't feel any particular way, I just try to go out and do what I'm supposed to do."

On why the passing game was so effective:
"I just took what the defense was giving me and was trying to be accurate with my passes. The receivers were catching the ball and were running great routes. I was just putting it on the money and they were making catches for us tonight."

On what it feels like one year removed from playing for a national championship and having a finish like this a year later:
"You can't be too worried on what you did last year; you just have to focus on what you have to do this year. This season didn't turn out like we wanted but we just need to keep moving forward."
