South Carolina to Face Michigan in Outback Bowl

The Michigan Wolverines and South Carolina Gamecocks will square-off in the Outback Bowl on January 1st in Tampa, bowl officials announced today. It is a match-up of two nationally ranked teams from two of the most prestigious conferences in college football the Big Ten and SEC. The Gamecocks are ranked 10th in the BCS while the Wolverines are ranked 18th.

"We are thrilled to extend invitations to the University of Michigan and the University of South Carolina to play in this years Outback Bowl," said Outback Bowl Chairman Mike Kerrigan. "These are two exciting teams featuring exceptional talent and should put on an exciting show on New Years Day. We look forward to hosting both teams and their fans and ensure them it will be a fabulous experience."

"The University of Michigan happily accepts the invitation to play in the Outback Bowl on New Years Day," said Dave Brandon, the Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics. "We are honored to represent the Big Ten in Tampa. Our team worked very hard this season and this is a reward for their effort. Its a great way to send out the seniors on Team 133."

"We are excited to represent the Big Ten in the Outback Bowl," said head football coach Brady Hoke. "The Outback Bowl organization and those associated with the Tampa community run an outstanding bowl game. They made my final game as an assistant coach at Michigan (in 2002) a very enjoyable and memorable experience. The SEC is an excellent conference and we look forward to the challenge of facing them on New Years Day."

"We are fired up and elated to be going to the Outback Bowl. It is one of the best bowls in the country on January 1, in Tampa, Florida. It's one of my favorite cities in Florida. We are certainly looking forward to going down there and trying to win our 11th game against the University of Michigan," said Gamecock Coach Steve Spurrier. "It probably will be beautiful weather down there, it usually is. It's a big opportunity for us. It's certainly an opportunity for me as a head coach to win an Outback Bowl. I know those guys will be fired up and ready to play. It should be a heck of a game and we're looking forward to it."

"It's been very exciting. It's been an eventful afternoon, that's for sure," adds Athletic Director Ray Tanner. "I know people think this was done days ago. I can assure that wasn't the case. We're very excited to go to Tampa and play Michigan. I can't be more excited."
